Minecraft Anvil Calculator

In short: pick your item and the enchanted books you want on it, and this free anvil calculator finds the cheapest enchantment order — every step, its level cost, the prior work penalty and whether anything hits Too Expensive! It checks every possible merge tree (not a rule of thumb), shows how many levels you save versus one book at a time, and needs no sign-up. Java Edition rules; Bedrock notes below.

How the anvil cost works

Every anvil operation costs: the value of the right-hand input (each enchantment's level × its multiplier) plus the prior work penalty of both inputs. Afterwards the result's anvil-use count is one more than the higher of the two. Because the penalty doubles with every use, the order you combine books in matters more than which books you have — a bad order can turn a 49-level job into a Too Expensive one.

Prior work penalty

Previous anvil uses0123456
Extra levels0137153163

Worked example: Mending + Unbreaking III on a shield

Book by book: Unbreaking III onto the shield costs 3 (3 × 1), then Mending costs 2 + 1 for the shield's first use = 3. Total 6 levels. Merging the two books first costs more: Unbreaking III onto Mending is 3, then the merged book onto the shield is 5 + 1 for the book's use = 6 — 9 in total. With only two books, book-by-book wins; with four or more, pairing books first usually wins.

Enchantment multipliers

Books are cheaper to apply than items carrying the same enchantment. Rare, powerful enchantments cost the most per level — this is why Silk Touch, Infinity, Thorns, Channeling and the curses are expensive to add.

Java vs Bedrock anvil rules

  • Same in both: prior work penalty (0, 1, 3, 7, 15, 31…), the result's use count, and the Too Expensive cap at 40 levels in Survival.
  • Java Edition: the calculator uses the Java multipliers above, as listed on the Minecraft Wiki.
  • Bedrock Edition: a few enchantments use different multipliers, and upgrading an enchantment the item already has charges only for the levels added. The best order is usually the same, but treat the level totals as approximate.
  • Creative mode has no Too Expensive limit in either edition.

FAQ

What is the best order to combine enchantments on an anvil?

Merge books in pairs first, put the expensive books (high level × high multiplier) where they are paid for only once, and apply the combined books to the item last so the item collects as few anvil uses as possible. The exact best order depends on your books — the calculator tries every possible merge tree and shows the cheapest one.

Why does the anvil say Too Expensive?

In Survival the anvil refuses any single operation that would cost 40 levels or more. The cost grows with every anvil use because of the prior work penalty (1, 3, 7, 15, 31 extra levels), so an item that has been worked on five times is almost unusable. Combining books first keeps the penalty low.

How is the anvil cost calculated in Minecraft?

Cost = for each enchantment on the right-hand input, its level × its multiplier (the book multiplier when the right input is a book) + the prior work penalty of both inputs (2^uses − 1 each) + any rename or repair cost. Each anvil use then raises the result's prior work count by one.

What is the prior work penalty?

A hidden counter on every item and book that goes up by one each time it passes through an anvil. Its cost is 0, 1, 3, 7, 15, 31, 63 levels — it doubles plus one every use — and it is added to every later anvil operation. Grindstones reset it by removing the enchantments.

Is the anvil cost the same in Java and Bedrock Edition?

The prior work penalty and the 40-level Too Expensive limit work the same way, so the combining order this tool finds is a good order in both. Bedrock values a few enchantments differently and charges only for the level increase when upgrading an enchantment the item already has, so Bedrock totals can differ by a few levels.

Should I put the item or the book on the left?

The item goes on the left and the book on the right — you pay for what is on the right side, and books are cheaper to pay for than items (lower multipliers). When merging two books, put the more expensive book on the left.

How many XP points does a 30-level anvil step cost?

Going from level 30 to 0 drains 1,395 experience points; a 39-level step drains 2,727. The tool shows the minimum XP points your plan needs, assuming you start each step with exactly enough levels.
