Minecraft Nether Portal Calculator

Convert between Overworld and Nether coordinates using the 8:1 ratio so your portals link up perfectly. Enter your coordinates and get the matching ones plus a copy-paste /tp command.

Overworld coordinates

Nether coordinates

X 0 · Y 64 · Z 0

/tp @s 0 64 0

Build your Nether portal near these coordinates so it links to the same Overworld portal.

How the Nether coordinate ratio works

Every block you travel in the Nether moves you 8 blocks in the Overworld along the X and Z axes; the Y (height) coordinate is the same in both dimensions. To find where an Overworld portal should connect, divide its X and Z by 8. To find where a Nether portal lands in the Overworld, multiply its X and Z by 8.

  • Overworld → Nether: X ÷ 8, Z ÷ 8, Y unchanged.
  • Nether → Overworld: X × 8, Z × 8, Y unchanged.

How to link portals reliably

When you step through a portal, the game looks for an existing portal near the calculated coordinates and links to it; if none exists, it generates one. Two Overworld portals closer than ~1024 blocks can end up sharing a single Nether portal. To avoid that, build each Nether portal at the exact calculated coordinates and light it yourself before traveling, so each pair links 1:1.

Using the Nether for fast travel

Because the Nether is 8× compressed, a short tunnel there covers huge Overworld distances. Calculate the Nether coordinates for each Overworld base, connect them with tunnels or ice roads, and you have a fast-travel hub network.

FAQ

How do you calculate Nether portal coordinates?

Divide your Overworld X and Z by 8 to get the Nether coordinates (Y stays the same). Going the other way, multiply the Nether X and Z by 8. So Overworld (800, 64, -240) becomes Nether (100, 64, -30).

Why is the Nether ratio 8 to 1?

One block in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld on the X and Z axes, so the Nether is effectively 8× smaller. This is what makes Nether tunnels a fast-travel network for long Overworld distances.

Why won't my Nether portals link correctly?

Portals link to the nearest existing portal within range, so two Overworld portals that are too close can share one Nether portal. Build each Nether portal at the calculated coordinates and far enough apart, and light them manually to force a clean 1:1 link.

Is the coordinate ratio the same on Bedrock?

Yes — the 8:1 horizontal ratio and matching Y are the same in Java and Bedrock Edition.
