How enchanting works
- Enchanting table — surround it with 15 bookshelves (one block gap, eye-level or one above) to unlock the level-30 tier. Each enchant costs 1–3 experience levels plus 1–3 lapis lazuli. The result is random within what the item allows.
- Want a specific enchantment? The table is random, so for an exact enchant use an anvil + enchanted book. Get books from Librarian villagers, fishing, chests, or raid drops (see the Librarian trades).
- Anvil combining — merge two of the same item, or item + book, to stack enchantments. Each use adds a growing "prior work penalty"; once a combine would cost over 39 levels you hit Too Expensive! in Survival, so combine in a smart order (books together first, then onto the item).
- Treasure enchantments — Mending, Frost Walker, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and the curses can't come from the table; only from books, trades or loot.

What is the max enchantment level?
It depends on the enchantment — e.g. Sharpness, Efficiency, Power and Protection max at level V, while Silk Touch, Mending, Flame and Infinity are level I only.
Can I put Mending and Infinity on the same bow?
No — Infinity and Mending are mutually exclusive in Java Edition. Most players choose Mending so the bow repairs itself; bring a stack of arrows.
How many bookshelves do you need for level 30 enchanting?
15 bookshelves, placed one block away from the enchanting table (a one-block gap, at table height or one block above), unlock the maximum level-30 enchantment tier.
