Getting a Farmer: the Composter
Farmers use a composter, made from seven wooden slabs in a U shape — it's the cheapest workstation in the game, so the farmer is usually the first job you can hand out. Villages almost always contain several composters next to their crop fields.
How to reroll and lock Farmer trades
Farmer novices randomly roll two of the wheat, potato, carrot and beetroot buy offers. If you want a specific crop trade (for example carrots because you already have a carrot farm), break and replace the composter until it shows up, then sell one batch to lock it in.
Best Farmer trades by level
- Novice — 20 wheat / 26 potatoes / 22 carrots for 1 emerald — Crop farms are fully automatable, so this is a hands-off emerald source from day one.
- Journeyman — 4 melon for 1 emerald — A single melon block counts, and an observer melon farm produces blocks faster than you can trade them.
- Master — 3 golden carrots for 3 emeralds — Golden carrots are the best food in the game for saturation and are also needed for night vision potions.
- Master — glistering melon slices — The brewing ingredient for healing potions, without spending gold nuggets.
Farmer emerald farm idea
Farmers will plant and harvest crops on their own if they have seeds and farmland nearby. Put one farmer on a fenced field with a hopper minecart under the farmland and you get an automatic crop farm that also feeds the trades. Pumpkin and melon farms with observers and pistons are the best scaling option.
Java vs Bedrock Farmer trades
Bedrock farmers can also buy beetroot and sell suspicious stew and cake at different levels. In both editions farmers share crops with other villagers, which is how villager breeders are fuelled; on Bedrock the farmer's harvesting is slightly more aggressive.
Farmer trading tips
A farmer is the only villager that works as part of a crop farm by itself. It harvests mature wheat, carrots, potatoes and beetroot, replants the seeds, and throws spare bread or crops to other villagers, which is how villager breeders run without you. Put a hopper minecart under the farmland and the crops it fails to pick up flow into a chest. Because carrots and potatoes replant themselves, a carrot field sells 22 carrots per emerald forever. At Master, golden carrots are worth buying too: they restore more saturation than almost any other food. Pumpkin and melon trades at Apprentice and Journeyman pair with an observer–piston melon farm, which outproduces any hand-planted field.
