Novice fishermen buy string or sell cooked cod. Reroll the barrel to get the string trade if you have a spider farm, then lock it. The enchanted fishing rod at Journeyman is rolled when the villager levels up.

• Novice — 20 string for 1 emerald — A spider farm or spider spawner gives lots of string.
• Apprentice — 15 coal for 1 emerald — Easy leveling with surplus coal.
• Journeyman — enchanted fishing rod (2 emeralds + boat) — Often rolls Lure or Luck of the Sea; cheap upgrade for AFK fishing.
• Master — 13 raw salmon for 1 emerald — An AFK fishing farm catches salmon passively.

An AFK fishing farm (rod held against a note block or tripwire) catches fish and junk passively. Sell salmon and cod to the fisherman and use the rod trade to replace worn-out rods.

Bedrock fishermen also sell buckets of cod and biome-specific boats, and present full tiers. Java fishermen pick two per tier at random.

A fisherman's barrel is the same block that stores items like a chest but can be opened with a block on top, so it fits neatly in storage walls. Fishermen buy raw cod, salmon, tropical fish and pufferfish, so an AFK fishing setup with a Luck of the Sea rod feeds them easily. At Master they buy boats, and the wood type they want depends on the village they spawned in, which is worth checking before you craft a stack. Their enchanted fishing rod trade at Expert can roll Lure and Luck of the Sea, a shortcut if you don't have an enchanting table yet. They also sell campfires and buckets of cod, handy for aquariums and smokeless cooking.
