Getting a Mason: the Stonecutter

Masons (stone masons on Bedrock) use a stonecutter: three stone on top of one iron ingot. A stonecutter is also the cheapest way to cut stairs, slabs and walls, so builders get a lot of value from the same block.

How to reroll and lock Mason trades

Novice masons buy clay or sell bricks. Rerolling isn't usually needed early; the decorative trades at Expert and Master (glazed terracotta and quartz) are rolled on level-up, so level two masons if you want specific glazed terracotta colors.

Best Mason trades by level

  • Novice — 10 clay balls for 1 emerald — Clay from lush caves or mud converted with pointed dripstone.
  • Apprentice — 20 stone for 1 emerald — A cobblestone generator plus smelting gives effectively unlimited stone.
  • Expert — glazed terracotta for 1 emerald — Saves dye, clay and smelting for colorful building blocks.
  • Master — quartz block for 1 emerald — No Nether trip needed; quartz blocks are great for modern builds.

Mason emerald farm idea

A cobblestone generator feeding a smelter array produces stone; sell 20 stone per emerald and spend emeralds on quartz and terracotta. This lets you collect Nether-only and dye-heavy blocks entirely in the Overworld.

Java vs Bedrock Mason trades

On Bedrock the profession is called Stone Mason and the pool is similar, but every trade in a tier is offered at once. Java masons pick two trades per tier at random, so not every Java mason offers quartz.

Mason trading tips

Masons are a builder's villager: they sell polished stones, glazed terracotta in every color, quartz pillars and quartz blocks, which otherwise mean smelting, dyeing or long trips to the Nether. Their stonecutter workstation is also the most efficient way to make stairs and slabs, giving one stair per block instead of the crafting table's four-for-six ratio. They buy clay balls, stone, granite, andesite, diorite and nether quartz, so a simple cobblestone generator with a furnace array to smelt it into stone feeds them endlessly. If you plan a large build with terracotta, a master mason is cheaper than mining badlands for it.
