Getting a Weaponsmith: the Grindstone

Weaponsmiths claim a grindstone: two sticks, one stone slab and two planks. The grindstone also strips enchantments and returns XP, so it's worth placing one near your enchanting area anyway.

How to reroll and lock Weaponsmith trades

Novice weaponsmiths roll an enchanted iron sword whose enchantments are random; break and replace the grindstone before trading if you want a better one. The enchanted diamond axe and sword at higher levels are rolled on level-up, so the only way to get a better roll there is to level a second weaponsmith.

Best Weaponsmith trades by level

  • Novice — 15 coal for 1 emerald — Coal is plentiful from mining or a charcoal tree farm, and the trade levels the villager fast.
  • Journeyman — 1 diamond for 1 emerald — Useful mainly to speed up leveling toward the Master sword.
  • Expert — enchanted diamond axe (17–31 emeralds) — Diamond axes deal more damage per hit than swords; an enchanted one is a strong early PvE weapon.
  • Master — enchanted diamond sword (13–27 emeralds) — Often rolls Sharpness or Looting, saving you 2 diamonds plus a trip to the enchanting table.

Weaponsmith emerald farm idea

A charcoal farm (automatic tree farm feeding a furnace array) supplies endless fuel; sell the surplus coal or charcoal to weaponsmiths, armorers and toolsmiths, which all share the coal buy trade.

Java vs Bedrock Weaponsmith trades

Bedrock weaponsmiths sell a bell and iron axe at Novice, and like other Bedrock villagers list a full tier at once. In Java, two random trades are chosen per tier, so a Java weaponsmith may not offer the enchanted iron sword at all.

Weaponsmith trading tips

The weaponsmith is the villager that sells enchanted diamond swords and axes at Expert and Master, which is a shortcut if your enchanting table keeps rolling Bane of Arthropods. Its grindstone workstation is also useful in its own right: putting an enchanted item through a grindstone removes non-curse enchantments and refunds some XP, so a bad trade weapon can still become a clean base for anvil books. Weaponsmiths buy flint, coal and iron, so a gravel-and-shovel setup or an iron farm keeps them stocked. If you only want one smith profession early, take the weaponsmith or toolsmith: both sell bells too, and a bell lets you call villagers inside during a raid.
